Traditionally digipaks are more expensive then jewel cases, but newcyberian.com has a digipak special which costs less then even the simplest jewel case spec.

I tried them and the quality was great.

Michael: there are options of a cloth sleve to cover the cd inside something like a digipack. They are rare to find in most packaging but the new Fleet Foxes has it and i have come across other CDs with this.

i like the digipack but like an LP, they should put additional cloth to protect the Cd from sticking into the paper or being scratched ... i experienced this when i bought Jack Johnson. The CD almost glued to the paper and when i took it out, there's some small particles that i need to wipe out hard..

The only thing I don't like about paper cases is that they get screwed up if they get wet because you're in direct contact with the paper. Otherwise, yeah, paper cases are nicer. Talk about a tangible product; directly touching the artwork instead of it being behind a plastic wall is a very nice tactile perk. They always seem more special too. This may be because many came to know paper cases through albums' special editions.

Do what Cloud Cult has done in the past and ask people to send them their not wanted Jewel Cases that would other wise end up in the trash to be reused for packaging of Cloud Cult CDs - of course no major is going to take the time to do this but small start ups could offer people that donate jewel cases discounts on CDs or send them something special through the mail or a free digital copy of the CD they are helping to put out.
