Broken Spindles-Beat Down Break Up remix

The Cassettes Won’t Listen remix of Broken Spindle’s “Beat Down Break Up” has a definite mid eighties feel to it. However, in the midst of canned handclaps and new wave keyboard lines there is a unique modern element that peeks through as well. To quote the press release it is “more no wave than new wave.” Lyrically it is about a difficult break up. Who hasn’t felt beat down by a break up or two? The vocals are delivered in a cold, almost robotic manner that belies the emotion in the lyrical content. Not having heard the original version of the song, I can’t comment on CWL’s take on it. I can, however, say that this version is worth a listen despite the fact that the spindle is broken and the cassette’s won’t.
