It takes balls of steel to sneak up on the Wu Tang, take something of theirs, and make it your own. Leon Michels of El Michels has said cajones and then some. The Affair didn’t only cover one Wu Tang song they covered a whole albums worth of instrumental takes on Wu Tang called, appropriately enough, Enter the 37th Chamber. To say that Michels is a frequent collaborator with members of The Dap Kings, The Budos Band, and Antibalas gives you an idea of the style of music to be found herein. But even that can’t prepare you for El Michels version of “C.R.E.A.M.” The slinky, soul organ and horns blend with the recognizable melody of the original creating something that, though a cover, is entirely original. It’s a good thing too, Wu Tang retribution is a bitch.
