For anyone who doubts M83’s ability to chill, I present their remix of Fires of Rome’s “Set in Stone.” A gently caressed piano opens the song for half a minute until it is met with mellow prog-rock style vocals. Enter the lilting keyboard lines reminiscent of some of Gary Numan’s gentler work floating alone and under the slightly spacier vocals now singing “I was disgustingly average as a child, but you can get us through the ropes with your vagina. I’m in love with the shine of your saliva…” It has somewhat of a 70’s space rock feel as mellow now builds to crescendo, strings and bass drum wailing and subsiding as the song closes on a single sustained, flat line note. Now, while you’re feeling nice and smiley warm, go to Fires of Rome’s Myspace page and listen to the album track of “Set in Stone”. You will be sufficiently convinced that no one can chill harder than M83.
