One can surmise from the name, Jookabox (formerly Grampall Jookabox) that this band does not make your typical, run-of-the-mill music. That the press release notes “musical nods to early Ween” cements this assumption.
Dead Zone Boys is Jookabox’s third album and is billed as “love story meets psychedelic zombie-musical.” “Phantom Don’t Go” is the opening track and serves as a good introduction to the concept album. Though the concept may be threaded throughout, if their earlier work is any indication, genre lines will be blurred.
Heavy war drums open the track until joined by haunting voices (all sounding like a sequel to Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.”) Comes the vaguely eighties vocal introducing us to the “Dead Zone Boys” and their story. Strange noises and distortions weave over slightly off rhythms. Judging by the opening track, this zombie concept album will be less scary and more scary good.
