Having recently seen Dig!, the story of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, TBJM’s new song, “Let’s Go Fucking Mental,” really caught my eye. Partially because I’m always amused by swears in song titles, but also because, based on the impression of Anton Newcombe left by the movie, it seems like an appropriate title.
Despite the other impression of Anton as being a mad, musical genius, the song lyrics are the equivalent of “my baby does the hanky panky.” That is, the title phrase is repeated throughout the song, with little else lyrically to back it up (aside from a few other sentences and the declarative “fuck” that peppers the background.) It’s served up on a bed of distortion and fuzz, which contributes to the agit-pop feel of the song. It’s simple, yes, but the more I listen to it, the more layers I hear within the fuzz of the instrumentation.
It’s from TBJM’s upcoming album, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?, due out the end of the month. Known for their neo-psychedelic sound, “Mental” seems more industrial than psychedelic, which makes sense based on the album title. Whatever the case, it’s good to see that Anton and company continue to make music that is more for the music itself than for the mainstream and I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
