The Clean-In The Dreamlife You Need A Rubber Soul

Occasionally I run across a band that I should know about but have never heard of despite my wide musical wanderings. Despite being at the forefront of New Zealand punk in 1978, despite Yo La Tengo and Pavement citing them as influences, I have never heard of The Clean. Now that I have, I’m definitely gonna pick up their Anthology and their new album, Mr Pop when it hits in September.

Having a very UK pop feel reminiscent of Robyn Hitchcock, the Waterboys, and, of course, the Beatles “Rubber Soul” is a light piece of psychedelia. That they can shift from something like this to something imminently more punky with other material shows that they have range (and longetivity as well.)
