Yoko Ono-Gimme Something (Morel Remix)

Apparently I have a thing for avant garde Japanese women and vowels this week. And Yoko Ono has a thing for reinventing herself. Utilizing old recordings and new musicians, she has set about remixing some of her back catalog. “Gimme Something” is from the soon to be released Double Fantasy LP.

This remix finds Morel working his magic with her songs. A pulsating beat starts the track and are soon joined by the keyboard and Ono’s distorted “Gimme Something” chanting. When her vocals expand, they change, become more robotic. There’s a lot of repetition but it’s built around a great hook and has enough variety throughout the track to counteract the repetitiveness. Say what you will about her past with Lennon and her music that amounted to caterwauling, the woman has longevity. Collaborating with top artists and being willing to explore a wide range of genre hasn’t hurt either. This track is hot and will even catch the attention of the kids out there that ask, “Yoko who?”
