My goodness... What a very good article. A lot of interesting points brought up and I'm sure it has changed the way I'll be listening to his music for now on.

Interesting and well written. I question your impulse to call The BQE a "New York" album, mostly because Stevens recently stated that the "50 States" project was a joke that has gone too far. Stevens as a post-modern artist is an interesting view point, especially with the distinctly Modern aspect of The BQE. It is similar to Copland in many aspects, yet struggles to find an individual identity.

Very well written, I think you nailed it. Sufjan is a true post-modern, to the point of self-destruction. He's become a cliche to himself, a walking contradiction. I find his resentment of our everything-now culture to be selfish, in that he puts himself so far above his listeners' expectations he neglects the redefinition of the song that they allowed. True, listeners will find their new Sufjan-inspired expectations elsewhere but it would have been a tragedy if Mozart, Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol, Mark Twain, and Ansel Adams had halted their progression after it began.
