Eels – “Fresh Blood” Single

“Fresh Blood” should score a starring role on the next Twilight movie soundtrack. What could be more perfect than Mark Oliver Everett, hombre lobo himself, howling about his thirst for fresh blood? In one heavily bearded man, we hear the eternal struggle between vampire and werewolf. The lead single off of Hombre Lobo, the Eels seventh studio album, “Fresh Blood” is a hair-raising, wail of a track. With Everett, or E’s new lupine image, he adds a brooding appeal to “Fresh Blood” that rivals even Robert Pattinson himself.

The entire track is driven by E’s carnal howls at an unseen full moon. When he is not erupting, he is seething his way through each tension-filled verse. The song evokes both sympathy and fear in its instrumentals and lyricism. E’s cries are backed by haunting synths and guitars, yet his motivations are clear and relatable. As he sings “Beautiful woman, get out of my head,” one can’t help but feel akin to the hombre lobo and his romantic troubles. “Fresh Blood” possesses a laid back complexity that promises great things from the Eels upcoming release.

  • decent song but the album is poor. I used to count the eels among one of my favorite bands but they haven't made a good album since Daises of the Galaxy.
