Confessions of a Shopaholic is a mix between The Devil Wears Prada and Uptown Girls—a girl trying to make it in her career while wrapped up in fashion when everything begins falling apart and as a last resort an auction must be held to make some quick cash.
Becky Bloomwood (Isla Fisher) lands a job at a financial magazine to continue making money to pay off her debt while working her way to her dream job at a top fashion magazine. She pens a personal finance column as “The Girl In The Green Scarf,” which becomes an instant hit. Becky hides her debt issues from her employer, but when a collection agent tracks her down at a taping of a live television show, he reveals that she has racked up thousands of dollars in credit card debt and has been dodging making payments. Her image is tarnished and she finally becomes a responsible adult and auctions off some of her beloved items to collect money to repay her shopping debt.
Based on the best-selling novel by Sophie Kinsella, Confessions isn’t the most meaningful movie on the surface. It does, however, teach the lesson of responsibility and that even though credit cards are a way to escape paying for things at the exact moment of purchase, you will eventually have to pay for them. Also, if you look down deep past the fun feelings of impulse buying the movie displays that material objects are just that and being obsessed with them may affect your career, friendships and relationships negatively.
Real shopaholics can destroy their relationships and finances and cannot throw a yard sale as a quick fix. Oniomania is the compulsive desire to shop and can be as serious as other addictions. MTV and A&E have featured shows about real-life shopping addictions on “True Life: I’m a Compulsive Shopper” and “Intervention,” respectively.
Overall, Confessions of a Shopaholic presents comedic performances (with Becky at one point smashing a block of ice in which a credit card was frozen) in a light-hearted way, but it is down playing what can be a serious problem for some.
